Inside Out – The People’s Art Project

This fascinating documentary tracks the evolution of the biggest participatory art project in the world, the wildly popular Inside Out. Travel the globe with French artist JR as he motivates entire communities to define their most important causes with incredibly passionate displays of giant black and white portraits pasted in the street. We witness young and old taking ownership of walls that were previously restricted and in doing so testing the limits of what they thought was possible. Tonight 8pm:

Marc Arthur, who heads the research program at Performa, will create a special cross-disciplinary performance debuting at the Martha Graham Studio on April 12th through 14th.

Following the success of Arthur’s recent collaboration with Jack Pierson at Xavier Hufkens Gallery in Brussels, Mascot combines dance, theater, painting and sculpture into a visually and conceptually rigorous hour-long experience. This project unpacks perception and loss to investigate the nature of violence through live painting.

Each performer experiences a unique catharsis that involves live doves and paint as body fluid. The performance then lives on as a permanent artwork when the paint dries. Please click here for the press release.

Literary Upstart: The Search for Pocket Fiction - L Magazine’s annual competitive reading series in which the city’s finest unknown writers read and compete for an enormous novelty check worth $250 and publication in our Summer Fiction Issue.

Our first semi-final reading will take place on Wednesday, April 17 from 7pm until 9pm. And be sure to join us at the following semi-final readings as well. Mark your calendars for the following dates:

For HEARD•NY, artist Nick Cave will transform Grand Central Terminal’s Vanderbilt Hall with a herd of thirty colorful life-size horses that will peacefully “graze” and periodically break into choreographed movement—or “crossings”— accompanied by live music. The project, which is open to the public free of charge, is presented by Creative Time and MTA Arts for Transit as part of a series of events celebrating the centennial of Grand Central.

We are thrilled to be partnering with The Ailey School, whose students will perform the twice-daily crossings, and with Chicago-based choreographer William Gill, who has worked with the artist to design the dancers’ movements. We are also delighted that harpists Shelley Burgon and Mary Lattimore, and percussionists Robert Levin and Junior Wedderburn will provide musical accompaniment to the crossings.

Red Bull Mini Drome will challenge both body and mind as riders navigate themselves around a unique and technically challenging course reaching speeds of over 30mph. The event will be open to fixed gear riders age 21+.100 competitors will have the opportunity to qualify in a single timed race and the 32 racers with the quickest time across 10 laps will progress through the competition to the finals which will be a single pursuit race format.

HISTORY

The Oxford Dictionary has defined explanations for these two words:

“Mini” meaning: “very small version of its kind”
“Drome” meaning: “a place for running or racing”

This sums up the idea of the project for Red Bull Mini Drome. The aim was to shrink a cycling velodrome to the smallest possible size while maintaining race worthy dimensions to enable single timed races, and the treacherous single pursuit. The original Red Bull Mini Drome was 7m wide and 14m long and 3.5m high at each end and made of plywood. The concept was taken to the next level when it came over to the UK. Red Bull partnered with Velotrack in Germany, the team who built the velodrome for the Delhi Commonwealth Games, to engineer the track that is here today. The track is built to Olympic dimensions and will challenge both body and mind as riders navigate themselves around a unique and technically challenging course reaching speeds of over 30mph.

Flip The Script will be hitting store shelves March 8 2013. I just got my advance copy. This has been a project ten years in the making. Over the last few years I have been very fortunate to have so many amazing writers open themselves to share their art & talents, insights, histories and personal stories with me.

The Handselect project and Flip The Script, the book has been a passion of analysing graffiti handstyles, interviewing artists from the different and most influential cities around the USA, placing them in a context that few outsiders understand and discovering some factoids that many of the best writers themselves were unaware of until we unearthed them in the process.

Headscapes is a group installation show about what goes on inside the heads of artists. In order to find creativity, artists often go into a particular head space. These frames of mind vary, each made from a pallet of ideas, feelings, sounds, symbols, and processes. In Headscapes, a group of self-organized, Brooklyn artists are making these places real in an empty warehouse in Long Island City. The show features work by more than 25 artists.

Viewers of the show are invited to go inside the various projects and inside the headscapes of artists. Set in a raw warehouse environment, the structures hide detailed interiors.
